The inspiration for this series comes from Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, where designs are appreciated not only for their beauty but also for the harmony and balance between the flowers and the space surrounding them. I collect leaves, seed heads and petals and take scans of them. Then I create designs by overlapping and layering the images, I like using flat, bold colour alongside texture to offset the beautiful, natural shapes.

For this design I scanned a winter hydrangea head after it had dried on the stem. I like how the bare veins from the dried petals can be seen around the edges.
